Turku Science Fiction Society (TSFS) is the oldest (founded in 1976) science fiction, fantasy and speculative fiction society in Finland, and the publisher of the magazine Spin.

TSFS’s activities are mainly held in Terrakoti, an office located right next to the University of Turku. TSFS shares the office with four other societies:

TSFS has close ties to the Finnish Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (FSFWA) and actively participates in the Finnish fandom. TSFS grants the annual Atorox Award for the best Finnish science fiction or fantasy short story published in the previous year. In addition, TSFS, FSFWA and Tutka are in charge of organising Nova, an annual short story contest.

Varjomafia and other gatherings

TSFS and Tutka have a weekly gathering, Varjomafia (”Shadow Mafia”) at Terrakoti each Thursday, 5 pm to at least 8 or 9 pm. At Terrakoti, you can also use our sf/f library. Feel free to join us on any Thursday of your choice!

TSFS organices regularly also for example movie nights, parties, and other kind of activities. The main language of some activities (like those centered around literature) is Finnish, but most are easily made bilingual if needed. Movies and TV series are watched with the original audio (most often English), usually with English or Finnish subtitles.

Membership

TSFS’s membership is annual. The membership fee can be payed either at Terrakoti in TSFS’s or Tutka’s events, or a by a bank transfer. After paying the fee, fill up your information (name, email, address, type of membership) on either the physical membership application form or send an email to kortisto [at] tsfs.fi. Finally, collect your membership card and this year’s sticker either from Terrakoti or wait for them to arrive with your next Spin.
